What the EU Green Claims Directive (GCD) requires.
Adopted by the European Parliament in March 2024, the directive obliges traders to substantiate every voluntary environmental claim made to consumers in the EU, with independent verification before publication. Member states must transpose the rules into national law by 2026.
National authorities can sanction misleading green claims with fines of at least 4% of annual turnover, alongside profit confiscation and temporary exclusion from public tenders.
EU member states must transpose the Green Claims Directive (GCD) into national law by 27 March 2026, with enforcement starting shortly after.
